Origin: The town was first chartered in 1727 as a parish of Gilmanton known as Upper Gilmanton, and incorporated as such in 1859. Mr. Belmont never acknowledged the act, having passed away that same year. Belmont was the residence of Governor William Badger, first elected in 1834.
